Welcome to Krugersdorp High School, a vibrant, well-resourced and truly representative former Model C School, ranked independently as one of the finest secondary schools in South Africa. Founded in 1903, this school has produced excellent results and unique opportunities for young men and women in the many diverse fields offered over the many decades of its existence.
The current buildings were built on a large 17 hectare campus in 1947 when the school relocated from central Krugersdorp to the rural outskirts which has now become the upmarket suburbs of Kenmare and Noordheuwel, owing to the vision of the then Headmaster, Sarel van der Merwe. The school boasts two residences, housing approximately 75 Girls and 100 boys. Facilities include 50 classrooms, 30 of which are fully interactive, 4 cricket ovals, 6 turf hockey fields, 12 turf and astro cricket nets, 9 netball and tennis courts, a main pavilion with a fully-equipped gym and a dual-purpose pavilion situated next to our swimming pool and netball complex. The first hockey astro-turf on the West Rand opened in 2007 on the campus with the generous assistance of past students, parents and local business partners.
As the school motto suggests: “Sapentia Vincit” (wisdom conquers all), Krugersdorp High has excelled consistently. Some recent highlights include the following: winners and runners-up in the MPC Challenge hosted by the Reserve Bank; winners of the gold medal in the Mintek Science Quiz, and consistently achieving university exemption rates of between 75 and 86 percent. Several students have also been placed in the top 100 matriculants in Gauteng over the past number of years, up to and including 2013. Leadership programmes such as ‘Enke’ from Australia and the ‘People to People Summit’ from the USA have presented learners with unique leadership opportunities. Past students achieving academic excellence at tertiary level are also well-documented by Pretoria, WITS, Stellenbosch, UCT, UKZN and UJ. Leading these youngsters is a team of 86 dedicated and highly professional educators, including a psychologist, a counselling team, and 4 deputies, two of whom manage the residences. There are 25 support staff led by a dedicated campus and administration managers.
In the extra-curricular domain, our hockey and netball teams are ranked in the top eight in Gauteng and in the top 20 in South Africa, with three players achieving SA colours in 2013 for hockey, netball and squash, respectively. The school hosts various “Best of the West” sports festivals for rugby, T20 cricket, netball and hockey, with the annual Easter Rugby and Hockey Festival being the highlight. The school is located alongside KHOSA (Krugersdorp High Old Students’ Association), a premier-league sports club which offers cricket, hockey, running and rugby to the public and old scholars alike. Culturally, we have many students participating in various activities such as drama, debating, music, public speaking, visual arts and achieving top awards in numerous arts festivals. The school also hosts events annually for Mr and Miss KHS, one-act plays and musicals to promote and accommodate both junior and senior learners. We strive to send pupils overseas annually on sporting and cultural tours and also arrange a variety of local and country-wide excursions. Again, a team of dedicated and qualified teachers and coaches make this possible after school and during school holidays.
Krugersdorp High School is a proud member of the Top 100 “Circle of Excellence” schools of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, with two past students having been awarded full scholarships from this prestigious organisation. A recent Sunday Times survey also ranked the school in the top 100 schools in SA, whilst Fair Lady magazine ranked KHS as one of the top 50 public schools in the country in 2013.
