ACADEMIC ACHIEVERS 2018

Did you know?

On our annual Academic Achievers tour, the cream of South Africa’s learners visit top universities and attend life enriching lectures on various subject matters presented by thought leaders in their respective fields. In October 2018, over 350 qualifying bright minds from across South Africa embarked on a unique adventure to the United States of America.

The group visited and attended lectures at Harvard, Yale, University of Columbia, Princeton University etc. and attended lectures on cancer research, astrophysics, internet marketing and others.  The unique exposure the learners gain cannot be replicated at any time in their lives, and they return with exuberance and a new view of the world outside and the opportunities that exist.

Can you try and imagine what impact this tour makes on the young brilliant minds, walking the corridors of the place where some the world’s greatest figures found their foundation?  Names like Obama, Roosevelt, Gates and many others come to mind.

When else, ever, would such a select group get a platform to share this experience with their intellectual equals in a well organised and supervised group?  The group interaction and the forming of new bonds between piers are just  some of the unique advantages of the Academic Achievers tour.

More about 2018’s Academic Achievers tour:

In 2018 our group of carefully selected intrepid brilliant young minds touched down in Boston, MA  to start their journey that would become Travel and Sport’s most successful Academic Achievers Tour to date.

Boston

A 3-day sojourn in Boston began in chilly weather and an enthusiastic group heading out to explore and take in sights across this storied city, traversing the Freedom Trail and culminating in an exciting visit to the iconic MIT and Harvard Universities!

Here, participants found enlightened inspiration on the hallowed turf and in the lecture theatres of these World-leading institutions.

New York City

Soaring buildings, bustling streets and a living, breathing metropolis greeted our band of travellers as they arrived at the crossroads of the World. A blitz across Manhattan saw the group visiting such icons as the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and Central Park. A sombre call at the 9/11 Memorial preceded another tour highlight with a visit to Columbia University, nestled in the heart of this seething concrete jungle.

The aspiring leaders of the group (of whom there were many) enjoyed the privilege of a tour of the UN Headquarters before all took a break to wander the streets at leisure in this so-named “Centre of the Universe”.

Washington D.C

The grand, exulted capital of these United Stated loomed encouragingly as we neared, but first with a much-anticipated visit to Princeton University. A campus tour through the tree-lined Genius Neighbourhood, finished off with a private lecture in one of the State-of-the-Art theatres, delivered by a State-of-the-Art professor. It was then on to “D.C” with such spectacular experiences as the National Mall, Capitol Building and Smithsonian Institute, lying in wait.As we neared the culmination of this epic crusade, wonder filled the eyes as our explorers wandered among the hulking monuments of America’s Capital.

A more subdued final day with imminent departure on the horizon, saw our freshly-inspired achievers exploring the city on their own. Shopping sprees, last-minute selfies and the frenzied exchange of email addresses and Facebook friend requests characterised the last hours in America as some prepared to head home, and others finished their tour with a visit to Orlando and Kennedy Space Centre, always one of the highlights of any USA visit.

Homeward Bound & anything seems Possible…

Upon arrival, parents welcomed their exhausted proteges, astounded at their children’s adamant declarations and ambitions to strive henceforth towards gaining admission to theses fabled institutions of education. The “World Classroom” has done its job and we watch with pride as our brightest minds head on into the World, newly inspired to realise their dreams having been a part of the Travel and Sport 2018 Academic Achievers’ Tour to the USA.

This unique opportunity changes the lives of our country’s brightest minds and we will reap the fruits when they become the leaders of the future.

What teachers had to say after they toured with Travel & Sport on the Academic Achievers Tour 2018:

“I would hereby like to extend my deepest appreciation for the Academic Achievers Tour to the US. What a privilege it was to be on this tour! Every aspect was absolutely superb – from the organization and arrangements, accommodation, transport and catering to the hands-on support, the professionalism and genuine care that each T&S member showed. The itinerary was full of exciting, interesting and relevant events and places, which opened up a whole new world  to the children.

Like myself, they had a wonderful experience and came back enriched and inspired. I have had such positive feedback from the children as well as their parents; it was a trip that they will never forget. What an amazing and appropriate opportunity for children of this calibre.”

Sonia Manthey, Parel Vallei High School.

“I would like to thank you once again for this opportunity. The HS Waterkloof learners and I really enjoyed the tour! It was an amazing experience to visit institutions such as: MIT, Yale and Princeton! Please extend my thanks to the rest of the team.”
