We are pleased to announce the launch of the 2019 St Stithians Boys’ College “Across the Alps” Science and Technology Tour to Europe. Over the 12-day tour routing, the group will visit a number of cities & sights in Italy, Switzerland & France with the tour highlights including, among others:

This special interest focus tour is customised around exposing the boys to the very essence of Science & Technology in Europe, its history, development and future possibilities. They will also have the unique opportunity to investigate various University programmes & see the industry 1st-hand.


The tour is customised & routed to afford the learners the opportunity to explore not only the selected subject fields, but to also incorporate a true “World Travel” element, keeping the group busy with many fun & exciting excursions.



  • Day 1:Meet your Travel and Sport representative at OR Tambo International Airport.
    Depart from Durban for your overnight flight to Rome, Italy.
  • Day 2: Arrive Rome - Arrive early this morning in Rome and transfer directly to your hotel to check in & freshen up. Then, begin your journey with a full-day city tour of the historic Roman city centre, including stops at the Roman Forum & Appian Way. Continue your tour of the past, with viewings of the Palatine and Capitoline Hills including the Hippodrome and Constantine's Arch. Finally, this afternoon transfer to the mighty Colosseum for a guided tour of this iconic structure. Return to your accommodation, enjoy dinner & cap off a thrilling 1st day with a walking evening fountains tour viewing the illuminated fountains including the Trevi Fountain, Bernini’s Fountain & the Spanish Steps.
  • Day 3: Rome - After spending the previous day walking in the footsteps of one of Mankind’s greatest empire builders, begin this morning with a transfer to the Holy centre of Catholicism and the smallest sovereign city-state in the World – The Vatican City! Transfer this afternoon to the ruined ancient Roman port-city of Ostia Antica. Here the group will learn about the pioneering scientific advances made by the Romans & Greeks which enabled them to build Rome’s primary port.
  • Day 4: Rome - Florence - Today, bid farewell to this ‘Eternal City’ and make your way north and onward to the city of Florence, stopping en-route to visit the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory. Begin with a visit to the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory located just outside the centre of Florence, on the same hill where Galileo Galilei spent, in forced exile, the last 11 years of his life making many of his cosmological observations, namely the phases of Venus and the Galilean moons of Jupiter. Arrive in Florence this afternoon and check in before heading to the Galleria dell’Accademia to admire one of Michelangelo’s masterpieces – The Statue of David.
  • Day 5: Pisa – Leaning Tower & Cathedral - Begin the day with a visit to the Museo Galileo, a museum dedicated exclusively to this famous astrophysicist and mathematician. Travel on to Pisa – boarding your train for the afternoon to be spent in this enigmatic city. On arrival, in this World-famous city, enjoy a short walking tour and a viewing of The Leaning Tower of Pisa!
  • Day 6: Florence – Maranello - Milan - Depart Florence and head into the heart of Italy, headed for Maranello – home of Ferrari! Here, enjoy a visit to Galleria Ferrari’s “Red Campus”, where the group will learn all about the mechanics of Ferrari cars, their production, and the science involved. After exploring the world of high-octane precision engineering, enjoy a pleasant lunch and then continue on to the city of Milan. This afternoon, travel to the University of Milan. Here you will enjoy a guided tour of this, one of Europe’s largest & most important Universities. After touring the campus, attend a private lecture. *TBC, subject to availability & time allowed
  • Day 7: Milan – Aiguille du Midi - Geneva - This morning, visit the Leonard Da Vinci Museum of Science before continue your journey to the next leg of the tour – Geneva Switzerland. After travelling through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, stop in the town of Chamonix where a tour highlight awaits – Passage up the Aiguille du Mid to get up close to the snow-covered the summit of Mont Blanc!
  • Day 8 & 9: CERN Discovery Tour These two days see the group visiting CERN. Here, discover the Large Hadron Collider among other special exhibits. See the iconic experiments of the gargantuan CERN facility and explore exhibits including the Microcosm Exhibition & the Synchro-Cyclotron. This is a must-see for all budding scientists & engineers!
  • Day 10: Geneva - Paris - Today, bid farewell to Geneva and board your coach to the City of Lights - Paris, France. En-route, detour for a short informal walking tour & lunch stop in Dijon en-route to Paris. After a brief sojourn taking in the stunning views on offer, continue to Paris. Arriving in the city, disembark your coach and transfer to your hotel. Check in and enjoy some leisure time, resting tired legs, before transferring this evening, to the Eiffel Tower to enjoy the glittering Global icon. Here, travel up to the top level to enjoy the breath-taking nigh-time views.
  • Day 11: Paris - RSA - After breakfast at your hotel, travel to visit the Cite des Sciences et de l’Industrie and  take an epic journey through the museum marvelling at the interstellar constellations at the 15-meter wide Zeiss Planetarium. This afternoon, enjoy a self-guided Walking Tour of Paris today where the group will visit a number of iconic sites in the city including the stunning Notre Dame Cathedral and Arc de Triomphe. Bid a sad farewell to Europe as you transfer to the airport to board your return overnight flight back to RSA.
  • Day 12: Arrive in SA - Arrive back in South Africa after an unforgettable journey of wondrous discovery!
